Introduction

Understanding where the most people are falling behind on their rent or mortgage is a key part of grasping the bigger picture of housing challenges in 2024. As financial pressures mount for many, this data shows just how much residents in different states are struggling to keep up with their housing costs. The 2024 Household Pulse Survey shines a light on these difficulties, revealing which areas are most in need of support and action to help people stay in their homes.

Data Notes

Understanding wealth and poverty is crucial to knowing if people can meet their basic needs. Many measures compare income to a certain level or look at the cost of living, especially related to housing expenses. One way we wanted to try and measure this was to, examine the percentage of adults who are behind on their rent or mortgage.

To gather the data, I utilized a Python script to scrape the Household Pulse Survey data from the Census Bureau’s FTP for Cycle 1 through Cycle 3 of 2024. I then combined the three panels together to reduce the margin of error for the state level estimates. I then visualized the data through Tableau.
