THRIVE is an Overflow Data project designed to help people better understand whether communities are positioned to flourish. The name stands for Tracking Human Relationships, Interaction, Vitality, and Essentials, reflecting a broader view of well-being that goes beyond traditional economic statistics alone.
The goal of THRIVE is to bring together public data on the conditions that shape opportunity, stability, purpose, and quality of life. These may include measures related to work, income, housing, health, family structure, civic life, social connection, and access to essential resources. By organizing these indicators in one place, THRIVE helps users see where communities are doing well, where challenges remain, and how different parts of well-being connect to one another.
THRIVE is rooted in Overflow Data’s broader mission to use data to explore the founding principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Overflow Data has described this focus as a way to highlight topics relevant to the American people, explore a renewed vision of the American Dream, and examine how purpose, virtue, civic well-being, and joy can be reflected in data.
The THRIVE project is not meant to reduce flourishing to a single number. Instead, it is designed as an exploratory framework. Users can examine individual indicators, compare places, identify regional patterns, and ask better questions about what helps people and communities prosper. In this way, THRIVE is both a data tool and a conversation starter about what it means for communities to truly thrive.
